Guidebooks on Argentina frequently warn readers that it is impolite to ask locals about certain topics, including the Malvinas' war between Argentina and Great Britain and the political repression of the 1970s, when the Argentine state apparatus tortured and executed many of its own citizens--the so-called "Dirty War." But visitors who have read about these events or seen them portrayed in such films as "The Official Story" are likely to have a lingering curiosity about that period and would like to know more. If you are one of them, I would recommend the "Argentinean Labyrinth" tour by Eternautas -Viajes Históricos (www.eternautas.com) -a company directed by historians who studied at the University of Buenos Aires.
The tour (available in English and several other languages) provides an opportunity to see significant places in the recent history of Argentina that are not on the usual tourist routes, and to learn of events that most Argentineans consider regrettable, even shameful. Our guide on this private tour was Fernando, a media graduate student who provided a structured account of such events and a coordinated itinerary of places that included a military facility where political victims were tortured, a memorial park dedicated to the victims, and an architecture school from which faculty and students "disappeared." Fernando candidly and freely answered questions posed by my wife and myself about the events and places in question. His English was excellent; we had no problem in understanding or communicating.
If you are curious about the political/social/economic history of the last few decades in Argentina, you would likely find the Argentinean Labyrinth tour very worthwhile. You will go home with a deeper awareness of the country you just visited. The tour focuses exclusively on Argentina; it does not make references to other countries. However, I believe anyone taking it will become more sensitized to threats to human rights throughout the world, including one's own country.
We paid $104 US for a 3-hour tour including the guide and private car with driver. My wife and I were the only participants. The tour provided one of the most memorable experiences during our three weeks in Argentina and was well worth the price. We could not have done it on our own.
The company also offers other tours (e.g., architecture, art, general city tours), that it says provide further depth on the topics covered, but my experience is limited to the one reviewed above.

Please thank Andrea, Agata and Julian for being such wonderful tourist guides. My husband surprised me by telling everyone saw on the plane (who had attended the conference in BA) that he had such a marvelous experience because of the shopping, the night at the museums and the tour of the various districts and the visit to Dock Sud with Miriam Gomes. I want to write to the various guide books and rave about your services.
Sincerely,

"Could I just send a quick email to thank you for all of your help during our recent visit to Argentina? All of the events you arranged for us and the guides you provided were perfect and really helped to make our trip a big success.
I hope you don't mind, but I have forwarded your contact details on to the Trade and Investment Officer at the British Embassy in Buenos Aires. His name is Alfredo Fierro and he helped us to set up many of our professional appointments with the Argentine Interior Design Association (DARA). Over my time in Buenos Aires I got to know Alfredo quite well and he was interested to hear about your agency. I know Alfredo receives quite a number of delegations from the UK and I am sure that many of the things you are able to organise would be of interest to him, so don't be surprised if you hear from him.
On the flight home to the UK, all of our students said how much they had enjoyed Buenos Aires and how they would love to go back to Argentina one day, We were all left with such a positive impression of your country, I am so grateful for all of your efforts in showing it to us.
Thanks again for everythnig that you did for our group.
Best regards"

We have just had 2 fascinating tours given by 2 different guides both of whom were called Julian.
One tour was called "Aristocratic Buenos Aires" and the other was "Hidden Buenos Aires: off areas". Both guides were extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about sharing what they knew about their city. The drivers were very good too. We finished our tours feeling that we had learned a great deal about the political, economic, social and architectural history of the city and the country.
I am an architectural historian and urban planner by training and my husband has conducted business with an Argentinian company in the past. We were lucky to have found Eternautas since your tours go beyond the typical tours of well known city landmarks and gave us an excellent opportunity to learn in depth about the city, something it would be difficult for us to do by ourselves.
Our compliments to you and your guides and drivers. We will certainly recommend Eternautas to our friends.

"I have used Eternautas many times and find their tours fascinating and informative. We toured the MALBA with an art historian who provided insights into the various styles of painting and the backgrounds of the various painters. We toured Evita sites and learned a great deal about her life...what was myth and what was reality. We toured Jewish sites and found the description of the history of Jews in Argentina fascinating...we were particularly interested in the changes that have occured over time in the Jewish community, especially since the bombings of the early 90s.
I could go on...I have probably been on every tour this agency has to offer. I have never had a bad experience.
I have taken Cintia's tours as well. Offers a totally different kind of experience than Eternautas. Cintia is certainly recommended over jumping on a bus and whizzing by various sites, but she does not have the historical perspective or insights offered by the "historians " (and historians in training, since some of the guides are graduate students) from Eternautas".

“I would express to you my gratitude with the professional services provided by ETERNAUTAS during the “Jewish Wonders of South America” tour. The valuable professional contribution of Gabriel Di Meglio and Marcelo Dimenstein helped on making this itinerary a vivid experience to the travelers, Both my clients and I have enjoyed and learnt from the contents delivered by Gabriel and Marcelo. All of the clients remember the professionalism and charm of all the people involved in guiding and special events activities.
The services’ coordination was neat and flexible and this tranquility allowed me to focus on customer care. The stay at the estancia was not only genuine but also charming. The same can be noted in reference to the visits to the study of Martiniano Arce and Draghi’s workshop. The visits to Libertad, IWO and Lavalle temples have been specially good. The same can be noted in reference to San Isidro, la Boca and San Telmo’s visit. I hope we can continue to work together and a lot in the future".

We were truly lucky today in having Julian as guide of one of three hours tour along Buenos Aires. We just wanted to say to you how professional, knowledgeable and enthusiastic he has been along the whole experience. We consider that in counting with Julián’s work you count on an extraordinary collaborator. The driver has also been at the high of the circumstances in every moment. Greetings.

"The aim of this note is to congratulate Florencia for the city tour she delivered to Gibbs. These travelers are pretty used to go around the world and have, of course done, plenty of tours. They have, any how, stated this was one of the best tours of their lives and that the guide was simply excellent.
We would like to than you a lot for it is very important tours to count on service providers as good as you are".

“I am back in the United States right now. And it's freezing. We did “The Other South” with Marcello, I think his name was? I can't remember. He was really great! We told our friends who lived in BA where we went and THEY had never even been to those places. We learned so much, too. I'm glad we did it”.

“I want to let you know how wonderful our visit to Buenos Aires was. We could not have had as good a visit without Natalia. She was just the perfect guide for us. We enjoyed her stories and learned so much from her history and knowledge of the country. We felt so comfortable asking questions and changing the schedule if we wanted.
We also can't say enough about our driver, Alberto. He was delightful and got us safely where we needed to go. He even helped us pick out the right wines to take back to the ship! We felt very safe and knew he was taking very good care of us.
We liked Argentina very much and would like to return some day. We will definitely call you then and we have already recommended you to friends. We tell everyone about the lovely, delicious lunch we had on the patio on the river with Natalia. What a wonderful spot. Thanks again for the terrific service and say hi to Natalia and Alberto for us”

“I wanted to write and tell you how much my friend and I enjoyed our two tours with Eternautas. I knew we had done the right thing when I saw the large tour buses with their hordes of people spilling out of them. Given our last minute request to have a tour of Buenos Aires, Eternautas responded quickly and very professionally. Our guide did an outstanding job and gave us a wonderful picture of B.A. and its colorful history.
Being a former university professor of history I enjoyed the depth of her presentation. It wasn't just a few titillating facts that you would toss out to a crowd of tourists. Also, she personalized it for us. I was having trouble with the Argentinian accent so she had to do double duty, both English and Spanish. We were also able to ask many questions and go more in depth than would be possible in a large crowd. Overall it was a real highlight of our time in B.A.. I hope to return someday. It truly is the Paris (or Madrid) of South America.
I will also share our experience of Eternautas with friends and others who are looking to visit B.A. I know how large group tours often fare. They all pale in comparison with what you are doing. Again, thanks for responding so promptly to our needs and keep doing what you are doing”.

"I wanted to send you a note of gratitude: first to you –for advising us in such a good way- then to Fernando and Flor. Fr their professionalism, thanks to them we learnt a little more about the history of your country. After learning about the way in which you work I would not hesitate in recommend you to clients and friends.
We have adored Argentina, your country is immensely rich in contrasts, but a trip is not only what you see, it is also the people and this is what has astonished us the most: the hospitality and kindness in the north and South, and that, Ana, is really something to underline.
Please thank also Fernando for suggesting us “Las Cuartetas”, it is “Bárbaro” as you would put it. Thank you all a lot, and if you ever go to Spain do not hesitate in contacting me".
